Local state of emergency declared for the Otago region 7pm 19 May 2026
A local State of Emergency is in place for the Otago region due to heavy snow. There is currently no state highway access in or out of the region, with multiple state highways closed and hazardous conditions widespread. Stay home, stay warm, and keep the roads clear for emergency services.
Avoid all travel in Otago and stay home.
A local State of Emergency was declared for the Otago region at 7pm yesterday, Tuesday, 19 May.
Metservice has an active orange snow warning in place for 18 hours from 2:00 am to 10:00 pm Wednesday, 20 May. Widespread heavy snow is affecting much of the Otago region, with hazardous road conditions, travel disruption, and the potential for power outages and isolated communities.
Parts of SH1, SH6, SH8, SH83, SH85 & SH87 are closed or will be soon.
There is currently no state highway access in or out of the Otago region. Stranded vehicles are reported on several routes.
Civil Defence is asking people to avoid or defer all non-essential travel. Please keep the roads clear for emergency services.
On top of what has already accumulated, 20 to 25 cm of snow is expected to settle above 300 metres, with 5 to 10 cm down to sea level.
Damage to trees and powerlines is possible. Cold conditions may cause stress for livestock.
Though it’s tempting to enjoy the snow, these conditions are dangerous. People are asked to avoid activities that may put them in danger, as emergency services may not be able to reach you if you need them.
People in Otago are advised to be prepared for more snow, cold temperatures, and possible power outages. If you must travel, drive cautiously, and ensure you have snow chains, sleeping bags, warm clothing, and emergency items. Conditions may change quickly.
What you should do
· If you have any welfare needs, contact your local council
· Avoid travel – Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary
· Prepare your home – Keep warm, conserve heating and have supplies ready
· Check on others – Especially older people, neighbour and those living alone
· Look after animals – Ensure pets and livestock have shelter, food, and water
· Charge devices - in case of power outages
If you must travel
· Check road and weather conditions before leaving, check your district Council channels for local roading updates NZTA for State Highway conditions
· Carry warm clothing, blankets, food and water
· Drive to the conditions and use chains if required
Stay safe at home
· Keep doors, windows, and curtains closed to retain heat
· Dress in warm layers
· Use heating safely and ensure ventilation
